an open letter. [Aug. 4th, 2009|12:56 am]
[feeling | blah]

F-list, this is not directed at any of you. It's more of a general thing that has been bugging me for a while now.

Dear PBers of the internets, I have a message for you.

It is okay to play against type, as far as selecting a face for your character.

Really, it is. In fact, it's kind of fun. Say you have a super-rich, somewhat manwhorish character. Now, you could go down the easy road and use, say, Ed Westwick for your character (if he's young) or Robert Downey Jr. (if he's older), since both have played that type of character onscreen before. But you don't have to. That's the fun of PB. That's why some of us choose to PB, because it allows us to create a character, pick a suitable look for them, and then write them.

Besides, it's so obvious. When I (and others) join a game, I'm not looking to write alongside some character named John Doe whose face is Jensen Ackles, but personality is pretty much Dean Winchester's. Does every high school HBIC have to look like Rachel McAdams circa 2003 or Leighton Meester? If you're looking for a crotchety mentor type, you don't automatically have to use Hugh Laurie. Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones don't always have to be the Voices of God (well, okay, let's make an exception for that, because that's so ingrained in my mind that if God does not sound like either of them, I will be sorely disappointed). I can understand associating an actor with a particular role, but c'mon, it's fun to shake it up a bit.

This rant is brought to you by the letter C, and for seeing one too many Ed Westwicks-as-Chuck in PB. Damn, I kind of wish I had stuck with Michael.
